One person was killed in a fiery crash in Billerica early Monday morning.
Massachusetts state police troopers responded to a car fire with possible entrapment on Route 3 North.
“Once on scene, Troopers determined that that no one was trapped inside the vehicle; however, a pedestrian was struck and seriously injured,” MSP said in a statement. “Billerica Fire and EMS responded to the scene to treat the injured party and extinguish the fire. Unfortunately, the injured person was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Officials said their investigation indicated the car that crashed and caught fire was a Honda Accord, and that after the operator of that vehicle exited, a Mercedes Benz struck them in the left travel lane.
Traffic was at a standstill for miles while crews worked to clean up the crash.
“For the safety of motorists and first responders, officials closed Route 3 until shortly before 4 a.m. when normal traffic resumed,” state police said in a statement.
